Zelensky Says US Drives for June Peace Settlement with Miami Summit Next Week

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced that the United States is pushing to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict by June and has proposed Miami as the venue for peace talks scheduled for next week. This development signals a more assertive American role in mediating the long-running war.

The announcement, delivered in remarks to reporters released early Saturday, revealed that this would be the first instance of Ukrainian and Russian negotiating teams meeting on United States territory. Zelensky quoted American officials as saying “they want to do everything by June,” indicating a compressed timeline for achieving a diplomatic resolution to the conflict that has now extended nearly four years.

The proposed Miami meeting would follow two earlier rounds of US-facilitated negotiations held in Abu Dhabi beginning in January. Those sessions produced one significant achievement—a major prisoner exchange between the two nations—but failed to resolve the territorial disputes that remain at the heart of the conflict. Russia presently controls approximately 20 percent of Ukrainian territory and is seeking formal recognition of these occupied areas plus additional control over the Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine.

Kyiv has consistently and firmly opposed any territorial concessions, viewing them as violations of sovereignty that would reward military aggression. Russian officials have declared their territorial demands non-negotiable and have warned they will pursue military solutions if diplomatic efforts do not yield favorable territorial agreements. This deadlock over territorial control represents the primary challenge facing international efforts to broker a lasting peace.

While diplomatic channels remain active, military operations continue. In a video statement released Saturday, Zelensky reported that Russia had struck facilities essential to Ukraine’s nuclear power plant operations during the previous night. The attacks forced several nuclear reactor units to reduce their power output, and one reactor shut down automatically. Zelensky condemned these strikes as unprecedented acts of terrorism and demanded that Russia demonstrate commitment to peace talks by halting attacks on critical civilian infrastructure.
