Vietnamese Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng and Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing held a significant meeting in Hà Nội on September 5, reaffirming their commitment to bolstering bilateral relations and cooperation across various sectors. This meeting marked Min Aung Hlaing’s first visit to Vietnam in his new role, and it underscored Vietnam’s support for Myanmar’s pursuit of stability, reconciliation, dialogue, and economic growth. The leaders expressed mutual admiration, with Min Aung Hlaing commending Vietnam’s socio-economic progress and its expanding regional and international influence, expressing a desire to learn from these experiences.
During their discussions, Hưng and Min Aung Hlaing acknowledged the advancements in their bilateral relations and agreed to enhance high-level exchanges and political trust. They emphasized the importance of resuming key cooperation mechanisms related to trade, security, and defense. Strengthening defense and security cooperation emerged as a focal point, with commitments to combat cross-border crime, cybercrime, online fraud, and drug trafficking. Additionally, plans were made to expand military training, facilitate exchanges among young officers, and collaborate on non-traditional security challenges.
Economic cooperation was another pivotal aspect of the meeting. Both countries expressed a shared interest in exploring avenues to boost trade and modernize existing agreements concerning trade, investment, and customs. Myanmar encouraged Vietnamese investments in diverse sectors, including telecommunications, digital transformation, high-tech agriculture, aquaculture, food processing, irrigation, and infrastructure. The leaders also discussed the potential for improving infrastructure and air connectivity, restoring direct flights, and developing joint tourism initiatives such as spiritual and medical tourism.
On the regional front, Vietnam reaffirmed its commitment to working with ASEAN members to maintain dialogue and constructive engagement with Myanmar. Both leaders emphasized the importance of resolving disputes peacefully and in accordance with international law. They also exchanged invitations for future visits, with Hưng inviting Min Aung Hlaing to attend the CLMV Summit and chair the ACMECS Summit in Hà Nội in November 2026, while Min Aung Hlaing extended an invitation for Hưng to visit Myanmar at a mutually convenient time.
