Vietnamese General Secretary and President To Lam emphasized the importance of fostering international trust and cooperation during his recent address to the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York. He advocated for adherence to international law and multilateral collaboration as pivotal strategies in navigating global challenges.
To Lam outlined four key priorities: rebuilding trust rooted in the UN Charter, promoting inclusive and sustainable development, responsibly governing emerging technologies, and enhancing the United Nations’ central role in global affairs. He urged nations to manage differences through dialogue and respect national sovereignty, stressing the importance of protecting civilians and adhering to international humanitarian law in conflict situations.
Addressing technological advancements, To Lam highlighted the potential of artificial intelligence and digital transformation to bridge development gaps rather than exacerbate inequalities. He called for transparent and accountable governance of technology, with increased participation from developing countries in crafting international regulations.
To Lam also reaffirmed Vietnam’s commitment to United Nations reforms, advocating for changes to the General Assembly, Security Council, and Secretariat to better serve the needs of developing countries. Additionally, he underscored Vietnam’s support for resolving regional disputes peacefully, in accordance with international law, and reiterated the country’s dedication to ASEAN cooperation and enhanced involvement in UN peacekeeping efforts.
