Vietnam’s pioneering venture into space technology, the VNREDSat-1 satellite program, has significantly strengthened its partnership with France, laying the groundwork for future collaborations on advanced satellite systems. Since its launch on May 7, 2013, VNREDSat-1 has continued to operate well beyond its initial five-year lifespan, remaining functional into 2026. This enduring success underscores Vietnam’s growing capabilities in satellite operations and technology.
The satellite program has been instrumental not only in advancing Vietnam’s technological capabilities but also in building human resources. From 2011 to 2013, Vietnamese engineers underwent rigorous training in both France and Vietnam, enhancing their skills in system design and satellite operations. This knowledge transfer enabled them to independently resolve technical issues, marking a significant step from relying on transferred procedures to crafting their own solutions. Additionally, the program has facilitated the development of an integrated remote-sensing system, which has distributed nearly 30,000 satellite images for a variety of applications, including environmental management, disaster monitoring, and national defense, since 2020.
According to Trần Hồng Thái, President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, the program has laid a critical foundation for future satellite initiatives. However, he emphasized the need for Vietnam to further enhance its technological autonomy. This includes advancements in the design of satellites, payloads, electronics, software, and ground systems. The goal is to transition from buying satellite systems to co-developing them, thereby mastering the necessary technology for independent future satellite projects.
The partnership between Vietnam and France entered a new era during President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to Vietnam in May 2025. During this visit, the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Airbus Defence and Space, and the French National Centre for Space Studies signed a declaration of intent for ongoing collaboration in space technology and Earth observation. This agreement aims to explore the development of a next-generation Earth observation system, potentially leading to the VNREDSat-2 project. Future collaborations will focus more on involving Vietnamese experts in mission planning, system design, and data applications, paving the way for Vietnam to strengthen its domestic expertise.
By emphasizing areas such as control software, remote-sensing image processing, artificial intelligence, and specialized sensors, Vietnam aspires to progress from a buyer of satellite technology to a co-developer, eventually achieving technological mastery. This shift is expected to empower Vietnamese scientists and engineers to design, operate, and innovate future satellite technologies independently, marking a significant stride in the nation’s space technology capabilities.
