Israel, Lebanon Agree to Ceasefire, Schedule Additional Peace Talks

by admin477351

In a significant step towards peace, Israel and Lebanon have agreed to renew their ceasefire and continue negotiations, aiming for a broader peace agreement, as announced in a joint statement with the United States. The ceasefire’s renewal hinges on a complete halt to attacks by Hezbollah, the Iran-backed militant group that is not part of Lebanon’s government and is excluded from the ongoing talks.

Under the terms of the renewed truce, both nations will establish pilot security zones managed solely by the Lebanese Armed Forces, with no presence of non-state armed factions. This initiative aims to bolster security and lay the groundwork for a more comprehensive peace deal. The development follows a series of high-level discussions between Israeli and Lebanese officials, during which both parties reiterated their lack of hostile intentions and committed to ongoing dialogue to resolve outstanding issues.

The joint statement also highlighted plans to create a security framework dedicated to safeguarding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of both countries, while preventing the resurgence of unauthorized armed groups in sensitive regions. Despite these diplomatic strides, tensions remain high along the border. The Israeli military reported intercepting projectiles and a hostile aircraft launched from Lebanon, while Hezbollah claimed responsibility for targeting Israeli forces in retaliation for alleged ceasefire breaches. Concurrently, Lebanese authorities reported casualties resulting from Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon.

As both countries strive for a lasting peace, they are scheduled to resume negotiations later this month. These efforts are part of a broader initiative to resolve long-standing tensions and establish a durable peace agreement, with continued support from international partners aiming to stabilize the region.
