Matt Hudson-Smith has etched his name in the history books by becoming the first man to clinch three European Championship titles in the 400 meters. The 31-year-old athlete achieved this remarkable feat at Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium, thrilling his home crowd with a commanding performance. Starting from lane nine, Hudson-Smith established an early lead and managed to hold off his competitors, crossing the finish line in 44.17 seconds despite a slight slowdown towards the end.
Following him, France’s Muhammad Abdallah Kounta claimed the silver medal with a time of 44.40 seconds, while Jonas Phijffers from the Netherlands secured the bronze. Phijffers recorded a national record with his time of 44.41 seconds. Hudson-Smith, who has deep roots in the Birmingham area and has been training at the stadium since childhood, expressed that the victory on his home track held a special significance for him.
The successes for the host nation did not end there. In the women’s 400m hurdles, Emily Newnham added to Britain’s medal tally with a silver. Newnham delivered a personal-best performance, finishing the race in 53.33 seconds. The gold medal in this event went to Slovakia’s Emma Zapletalova, who completed the race in 52.91 seconds. Portugal’s Fatoumata Binta Diallo took home the bronze with a national record time of 53.55 seconds.
