Thailand has voiced its apprehension to China regarding the recent delivery of Chinese tanks to Cambodia, fearing it could destabilize the delicate ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia. This concern was articulated by Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul during a recent meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, as reported by Thailand’s foreign ministry. The timing and manner of the military delivery have raised concerns about complicating already tense relations between the neighboring countries, despite existing ceasefire agreements.
The shipment in question involved 39 T-59D battle tanks from China to Cambodia, part of an established military cooperation agreement between the two nations. Thai officials have noted that there is no evidence to suggest these tanks have been stationed near their shared border. However, the historical context of violent clashes between Thailand and Cambodia, stemming from disputes over land and maritime boundaries based on old colonial treaties, continues to strain diplomatic negotiations.
China, on its part, has stated that its defense collaborations with both Thailand and Cambodia are standard practice and not intended to target any third party. Earlier this year, China also supplied Cambodia with a Type 056 guided-missile corvette, reinforcing its defense aid to the nation. Despite these developments, Thailand has expressed appreciation for China’s neutral stance and its efforts to mediate and reduce tensions between the two Southeast Asian countries.
Furthermore, discussions between Thailand and China have led to an agreement to establish a new dialogue mechanism involving their foreign and defense ministers. This initiative aims to foster communication and address issues beyond border tensions, including combatting cross-border scam operations. The inaugural session of these talks is expected to prioritize addressing such fraudulent activities, marking a step forward in bilateral cooperation between the two nations.
