Thailand must accelerate its adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance productivity and maintain competitiveness, according to experts at a recent forum in Bangkok. Deputy Prime Minister and Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation Minister Yodchanan Wongsawat emphasized the importance of developing specialized technological capabilities in sectors such as agriculture, biodiversity, and environmental technology, rather than competing in mass production against larger economies.
Yodchanan highlighted the need for strengthening expertise in advanced technologies like sensors, photonics, and semiconductor packaging. He stressed that education should play a crucial role in Thailand’s AI strategy, advocating for a curriculum that focuses on mathematics, science, and systems thinking. He also underscored the importance of reskilling and lifelong learning as technological advancements continue to unfold.
Bangkok Bank executive Kobsak Pootrakool pointed out that businesses should leverage AI to enhance productivity rather than treat it as a mere demonstration tool. He noted that successful AI implementation requires reliable and well-organized data. Kobsak also discussed the increasing influence of automation and robotics in manufacturing, urging both businesses and the government to invest in technology, infrastructure, and data systems.
Jirayut Srupsrisopa, founder of Bitkub Capital Group, advocated for an AI-first approach across the Thai economy. He argued that such a strategy could help businesses navigate demographic and workforce challenges while boosting productivity. The forum’s panelists concurred that effective AI adoption hinges on fortified education systems, robust data infrastructure, appropriate regulation, and enhanced collaboration between public and private sectors.
