The beloved animated classic Moana is receiving a modern update with a live-action adaptation that portrays its lead character as a fearless warrior, rather than a traditional princess. This new version aims to captivate a new generation by focusing on themes of courage, compassion, and cultural identity.

Dwayne Johnson returns as the demigod Maui, reprising his iconic role from the 2016 animated film, while also taking on the role of producer. Johnson emphasized that Moana is “not a princess, but a warrior,” and highlighted the film’s universal appeal with its themes of community, self-discovery, and Polynesian culture.

The live-action film introduces 19-year-old Australian actor Catherine Lagaʻaia, who is of Samoan descent, as the titular character. She emerged from an extensive audition process that saw participation from over 32,000 hopefuls. Reflecting on her role, Catherine expressed that playing Moana has been a personal journey of growth. She admired the character’s compassion and empathy, noting how Moana chooses understanding over anger in challenging situations.

The film’s emphasis on resilience, empathy, and authenticity is designed to resonate with Generation Alpha while remaining faithful to the spirit of the original story. This approach seeks to connect with audiences of all ages, offering a fresh perspective on Moana’s journey.

The live-action Moana premiered in India on July 10, available in both English and Hindi, as it continues to share its timeless message of courage and cultural pride with a global audience.
