Singapore and Thailand are set to enhance their bilateral and regional partnerships as they gear up for consecutive ASEAN chairmanships, with Singapore assuming the position in 2027 followed by Thailand in 2028. This decision was made during the fifth Singapore-Thailand Leaders’ Retreat held in Bangkok on September 2, marking the first meeting between Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, and the first such bilateral retreat in over a decade. The leaders emphasized the strength of their nations’ relationship and committed to creating a multi-year agenda to ensure continuity across their ASEAN leadership terms.
The discussions between the two leaders highlighted plans to broaden cooperation in various sectors such as artificial intelligence, digital and green economies, energy resilience, food security, and transnational crime prevention. Additionally, they pledged support for a rules-based international order and promoted stronger ASEAN regional integration. A significant focus was placed on energy collaboration, including backing for the ASEAN Power Grid and the Laos-Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore Power Integration Project, which facilitates the importation of renewable hydropower from Laos into Singapore via Thailand and Malaysia.
During the retreat, Wong and Charnvirakul also witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding focused on social sector development. This agreement aims to foster the exchange of knowledge and research concerning social welfare policies and encourages collaboration between relevant institutions in both countries.
Economic ties between Singapore and Thailand remain robust, with bilateral trade reaching approximately US$52.4 billion in 2025. Furthermore, Singapore has maintained its position as Thailand’s largest source of foreign direct investment for three straight years, underscoring the strong economic interdependence between the two nations.
