Vietnam and Laos have committed to enhancing their collaboration across various sectors, notably in investment, trade, infrastructure, energy, and human resource development, as part of their 2026 cooperation agenda. At a recent meeting held in Da Nang, representatives from both nations reviewed the strides made over the past eight months and set forth priorities for the remainder of the year.
The economic partnership between the two countries has seen significant growth, with Vietnamese enterprises launching 20 new projects in Laos, collectively valued at $638.3 million within the first seven months of 2026. Laos continues to be Vietnam’s top destination for overseas investments, hosting approximately 300 projects with Vietnamese backing, totaling over $7 billion in value.
In terms of trade, bilateral exchanges amounted to about $1.3 billion during the first half of the year. Further cooperation is underway in sectors such as energy, transport, construction, and infrastructure connectivity, underscoring the deepening ties between the two nations.
Education and human resource development remain crucial components of the collaboration. Vietnam has pledged to provide 1,300 scholarships to Lao students this year and has allocated $43 million in aid to Laos for 2026, as part of a broader assistance program spanning from 2026 to 2030.
Both countries have also agreed to enhance coordination on major joint projects, address any investment challenges, and strengthen economic connections across the Vietnam-Laos-Cambodia region, indicating a strong commitment to regional stability and prosperity.
