Vietnam and Switzerland are set to enhance their Comprehensive Partnership with new initiatives in trade, investment, and technology. This development follows the recent official visit of Swiss President Guy Parmelin to Vietnam, marking the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.
During the visit, leaders from both countries reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening political dialogue, economic ties, and collaboration through international institutions. A significant outcome of the discussions was the signing of a Free Trade Agreement between Vietnam and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), which includes Switzerland. This agreement aims to improve market access and foster business expansion, ultimately creating more opportunities for trade and investment once it is implemented.
Vietnam and Switzerland have set their sights on increasing bilateral trade, which surpassed $1 billion in 2025, and encouraging greater Swiss investment in Vietnam. Key sectors identified for investment include green finance, digital technology, infrastructure, sustainable tourism, and workforce development. Moreover, the two countries plan to explore joint research opportunities and technology transfer in fields such as biomedicine, renewable energy, agriculture, and the digital economy.
The visit also underscored the importance of educational partnerships. Vietnam intends to strengthen exchanges involving experts, researchers, and students, leveraging Switzerland’s experience in education and scientific research. This collaboration is expected to support innovation and facilitate the commercial application of research.
Both countries expressed their support for sustainable development, free trade, multilateral cooperation, and a rules-based international order. They conveyed confidence that their closer collaboration would contribute to economic growth and enhance regional and global stability.
